The Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) has issued a directive requiring companies involved in critical sectors, such as telecommunications and security, to register their web addresses using Kenyan internet domains within six months. This move aims to enhance cyber safety and protect critical information infrastructure in the country.
Background and Rationale
The decision was made during a meeting of the National Computer and Cybercrimes Coordination Committee (NC4) on March 14, 2024. The NC4 is a multi-agency body that oversees national cybersecurity matters and facilitates international cooperation in addressing cybercrime in Kenya.According to CA Director-General David Mugonyi, all systems designated as critical information infrastructure must ensure the security and reliability of any .KE domain names they use. This directive applies to a range of entities, including:
- Mobile communication and internet connectivity firms
- Judicial institutions
- The country’s electoral body
- National security agencies
- National health institutions
- Food quality, safety, and research entities
- Aviation systems
- Railway and road transport support services
- Power generation and transmission structures
Current Compliance Status
Despite the directive, several prominent organizations have yet to comply. Notable firms such as Airtel Kenya, Kenya Airways, and the Kenya Seed Company continue to use .com domains, while the Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organisation (KALRO) uses a .org domain.
Benefits of Local Domain Registration
Proponents of using local domains argue that they facilitate easier access to target markets and enhance interactions with designated clients. The Kenya Network Information Centre (KeNIC) is responsible for registering and issuing these domains. The use of .KE domains is believed to offer several advantages:
- Credibility and Trust: A .KE domain name can enhance a business’s credibility, as it signals a commitment to the Kenyan market and can build trust with local customer.
- Local SEO Advantage: Websites with .KE domains are more likely to rank higher in local search engine results, improving visibility among Kenyan audience.
- Economic Support: Registering domains locally supports the Kenyan economy by contributing to the growth of local companies and creating employment opportunitie.
Domain Registration TrendsDuring the first quarter of 2024, the number of registered .KE domains increased by 2.3%, reaching 108,338 from 105,936 in December 2023. The .co.ke sub-domain holds the largest market share, accounting for 84.8% of users.
