CIRA Says .CA Registry Growing Fast
March 2005
The Canadian Internet Registration Authority (cira.ca)
announced this week that the 500,000th .ca domain
name has been registered. The CIRA says the domain
name is stronger than ever since the company began
administering the then-60,000-strong registry in
December 2000.
In 2004, the number of .ca domain names
registered increased by 24 percent from 389,216 in
2003, to 482,684. Meanwhile, the number of .com
domain names registered by Canadians saw a smaller
10 percent increase from 1,043,043 in 2003 to
1,144,801 in 2004. Already some 17,316 new .ca
domain names have been registered since January 1,
2005, averaging an estimated 275 new registrations
per day.
"The ongoing success of .ca points to the value
that Canadian individuals, businesses, and
associations see in .ca domain names. The .ca
names work anywhere in the world and are
recognized as Canadian," says Bernard Turcotte,
CIRA's president and CEO. "They are easy to
register and can cost less than .coms when
registered through many of our 80-plus CIRA
certified registrars."
