Squatter of HPCL domain name evicted
September 2004
In a major relief to Hindustan Petroleum
Corporation Limited, the World Intellectual
Property Right Organisation ordered the domain
name "hindpetro.com" be given back to the PSU from
a US-based cyber squatter.
Holding that California-based Neel Punatar had
registered the domain name in "bad faith", Mary
Padbury, of WIPO who decided the dispute, said
HPCL satisfied the requirements of Uniform Domain
Name Dispute Resolution Policy for the transfer of
domain name in question.
"There is evidence of registration of the domain
name for the purpose of selling it to the
complainant (HPCL) for valuable consideration in
excess of the respondent's (Punatar) apparent
out-of-pocket expenses," said WIPO, the apex body
of Arbitration and Mediation in the field.
