UK BUSINESSES FLY .CO.UK FLAG
11th June, 2003
According to a survey by UK naming authority Nominet, over a third of UK businesses say that their online image is the most important factor when choosing a domain name.
Asked to rank price, availability and image in Nominet's latest annual survey, 37% of companies put image top of the list. However, there was considerable regional variation, with businesses in the Midlands the most image conscious (48% putting it first), while only East Anglian companies focused on watching the pennies.
Lesley Cowley, managing director of Nominet UK, is obviously pleased with the success of the .uk domain space and its recognition in the marketplace:
"Over four million domain names have been registered since Nominet started work in 1996, and new registrations currently run at around 60,000 per month."
Demys.net asked Cowley whether, other than through the survey itself, Nominet actively promoted the business perception of .uk amongst Internet users:
"We aim to develop trust and understanding of the .uk Top Level Domain by building good relationships with our members, registrants, the press, opinion formers and the broader internet community.
"However, as a not-for-profit Registry, we do not proactively sell domain names nor do we undertake marketing activities that promote the image of .uk. Rather, our communications strategy aims to explain the issues to our different audiences so that they can make informed choices about the domain name system."
