Geelong Grammar wins domain name tussle July 10 2003
Geelong Grammar School, a well-known Australian boarding school whose alumni include Prince Charles, has won control of the domain name www.geelonggrammarschool.com in a ruling by a UN panel.
The panel ordered the transfer of the domain name to the school which had complained to the World Intellectual Property Organisation that the name was being used illegally.
The ruling said the registered owner of the name - George Hunter of San Jose, California - had no rights or interests in the name. The owner of the site did not file a defence.
Lawyers for the school said the name was confusingly similar to the school's name, which is trademarked. Hunter could not have created the name by pure coincidence, they said.
Agreeing with the claim, the panel noted that Geelong Grammar School had built up an international reputation since its foundation in 1855.
