Cybersquatters hit Winter Games Jul. 31, 2003
Barely two weeks after winning the Winter Olympic Games for 2010, the city of Vancouver and the Whistler resort has already been hit by cybersquatters.
Two Internet domain names — www.2010-WinterGames.com and www.Vancouver2010-OlympicGames.com — have been posted for sale at eBay.com.
The opening bid? They're asking $500,000 in U.S. funds. That's just to start.
"TWO (2) perfect Web Site names to market just about anything before 2010 and during the Winter Games! A $ Billion Industry by 2010!" says the eBay web page.
As of Thursday afternoon, no one has opened the bidding.
The ad continues to say that the site names have an "estimated appraisal value" of a half-million dollars, about 0.5 per cent of the billion-dollar revenue expected to accrue from the event.
