More Than 225 Million Domain Names Now
Almost 6 million domain names have been registered during the 4th quarter of 2011, causing the
number of registered domain names to soar to an all-time high of 225 million all over the world
across all domains. This information was based on the most recently published Domain Name Industry
Brief that is being managed by VeriSign Inc - the trusted provider of internet infrastructure
services for the networked world.
The addition of 5.9 million domain names is equivalent to a 2.7 percent growth rate
during the 3rd quarter of 2011. This also makes it the 4th consecutive quarter that has
a growth rate of more than 2 percent. Ever since the 4th quarter of 2010, there has been
an increase of over 20.4 million or 10 percent in registrations.
During the 4th quarter, it was the .net and .com TLDs (top-level domains) that
underwent significant growth with a cumulative total of 113.8 million names. This figure
is equivalent to an increase of 2 percent in the base over the 3rd quarter of 2011 and
an increase of 8 percent over the same quarter in 2010. A total of 7.9 million new ".net"
and ".com" registrations have been recorded during the quarter. This figure is
equivalent to an increase of 4 percent year-over-year in new registrations. As of the
4th quarter, there has been a 73.5 percent renewal rate for the ".com/.net" domains –
this figure is an increase from the recorded 73.3 percent during the 3rd quarter.
There has been a 64 billion query load (with a peak of 117 billion) on the average
daily Domain Name System (DNS) of VeriSign during the quarter. An increase of 8 percent
(51 peak growth) has been observed in the daily average.
